Bright ideas to keep a zoom lens from sliding?

I got myself a Nikkor  AI-s 70-210mm zoom and its in perfect shape, only problem is the front end is so heavy, when pointed at almost any angle other than parallel to the ground, the zoom creeps back toward 70mm. Anyone have any ideas how to keep it from sliding down without gunking up the lens? I was thinking about maybe foam placed a certain way. Id rather not use anything with an adhesive, I dont wanna mess up the lens body.

Thick rubber band. Cheap. Simple, Replaceable. No muss & no fuss!

If you zoom a lot and find a rubber band too hard to grip, get a Scunci ponytail band. Get a white one so it's easy to find in the dark. Any drug store will have them in the women's hair-care department. About a buck.

Jeff you're the man. haha thanks. neeeeever even though of a rubber band. Here I am planning some elaborate thing out in my head that would like rest against the camera body and act like a beam to support the zoom part of the lens from moving. I guess I need some sleep, thanks again.

I can't take the credit for the idea. I once saw a sports photographer using it ... LOL.

By the way, if you shoot on a tripod and especially if the zoom does NOT have a tripod socket on the body, I should point out that Bogen/Manfrotto does make a beam exactly like what you describe! I'll see if I can find a link for you ...

Haha thats hilarious. Thats almost exactly what I was planning to make in my head. I think Ill go with the rubber band though. Seems like a better, simpler idea haha.

Having a wife and two teenage daughters I have a continuous supply of the ponytail bands if needed. Basically it is a cloth covered rubber band.  That's what I've been using and it works like a charm.  Those rubber bands are a multipupose handy little gadget. I use them for a few tasks.
