    Two asteroids at once

Last night with my 120mmST refractor I had a look at 11 Parthenope and 16 Psyche in the same field. (February Astronomy mag. page 61)

In between Aldebaran and Epsilon Tauri in the mouth of the Hyades cluster is the 6.21 mag. binary star Struve 559. The mag. 6.90 primary has a mag.7.00 companion 3" away. Just east of this star is the field of the asteriods.

Last night I located both asteriods when they were 03'-05" apart. During the next 24 hours they traveled about the same distance ENE. (Psyche 4'-21", Parthenope 4'-26") Tonight, before the clouds rolled in, I caught them again when they were only 02'-13" apart. I made a chart from my Starry Night Pro and added dots and arrows showing their locations and movements. They are going to get closer in the next couple of days but the Moon is going to get closer plus I didn't know what the weather was going to do so I went ahead and found them now while I could. Hopefully I will be able to track them some more.

Has anyone else found this pair of asteriods? The only other pair of asteriods I have ever seen in the same field of view was 30 Urania and 230 Athamantis back in December 2000.(December 2000 Astronomy mag. page 73)

    Re: Two asteroids at once

Found the asteroids again tonight for the third straight night in a row. Always look around the same time (7:45). The Moon is washing out some of the fainter field stars, but I was still able to plot their positions. They are now only 01'-29" apart.

I haven't seen any asteroids yet, but that may be a pair I'll have to take a gander at. Smile [:)]
