Help needed regarding watching aurora borealis from Rovaniemi Finland

    Hi,

My wife and I are going to visit Rovaniemi Finland in October. We would like to ask you experts some questions:

    a) What are the chances to see the Aurora Borelis in mid October from Rovaniemi Finland?

    b) Can some one direct us to a good weather site that will give us the probability of clouds and temperature in that area?

    c) Is there a near by place that is better for watching the aurora borealis?

    d) Any recommendations?

    Thank you very much,

    Hi Meni

    a) As long as the sun is 'active', Sep/Oct, Mar/Apr are the best times for viewing aurora as the earths magnetic field tips south during the equinox.   Never heard of Rovaniemi but Finland is high enough latitude that aurora frequently occur.

    b) google is your friend

    c) Any dark sky site with no light pollution  north.  The higher your latitude (further north)  the better your chances.

    d) Warm clothes, hot thermos flask, deck chair and some food.

    Good luck

OK, looking at the globe, your chances are excellent as long as the sun is doing its job and the skies are clear. Ask the locals when you get there.

     I envy you.
