On the road: Great Lakes Star Gaze, day 3

Posted 09-29-2008 by Michael Bakich

Editor's note: Visit the online photo album, " Astronomy on the road: Great Lakes Star Gaze 2008" for images from Michael's trip. During the day, I spent several fun hours chatting lots of attendees, including well-known amateur...

On the road: Great Lakes Star Gaze, days 1 and 2

Posted 09-27-2008 by Michael Bakich
Now that I have Internet access, I can report the first two nights at the Great Lakes Star Gaze (GLSG) were clear. Unfortunately, they also were quite humid. Editor's note: Visit the online photo album, " Astronomy on the road: Great Lakes Star Gaze 2008" for more images from Michael's trip. Check out this great planetary nebula image

Posted 09-10-2008 by Michael Bakich
As Astronomy ’s photo editor, I get some cool images pretty much on a daily basis. Monday, I opened my e-mail to find that one of the magazine’s long-time imagers, Keith Quattrocchi, in association with Matt Helm, has imaged a hitherto undesignated planetary nebula in the constellation Cygnus. And, it’s a cool one. Helm first discovered the object after imaging an HII region (a cloud of glowing hydrogen) only 48' from the Crescent Nebula (NGC...
