LHC gets hip

Posted 09-11-2008 by Karri Ferron

For those of you physics and cosmology enthusiasts who are into learning through alternative methods (or you’re just someone who likes some clever music and lyrics), you’ve got to check out the Large Hadron Rap video on YouTube. Of course, that’s if you aren’t one of the more than 1.5 million people who’ve viewed it already.

The nearly 5-minute scientific rap goes to the credit of Kate MacAlpine, a 23-year-old American trainee at CERN. She wrote lyrics explaining the goals of the Large Hadron Collider and how it works on her bus rides to and from work, before putting them to music and producing a music video around CERN’s headquarters along the Franco-Swiss border.

The video is funny, informative, and entertaining — a great way to learn about the particle accelerator that passed its first test September 10. MacAlpine says she wants to be a science writer, and from her work with this rap, I would say she has a promising future.

Read "Astronomy previews the Large Hadron Collider's big day" to learn more about what scientists hope to learn from the LHC.

Fantastic video, like you said funny and informational. There has been a lot of talk in the news lately about this controversial project and the impacts it can potentially cause to the earth, now I finally know what they're talking about :) Scientists also are studying this "dark matter & energy" in Sudbury, ON, where I live at the SNO Lab (Sudbury Neutrino Observatory), deep underground in a functioning mine. I'm a new subscriber so I'm not sure if Astronomy has written any articles about this research facility, but it would surely be a interesting project! Anyway thanks again for the link to the video, I'm sure I'll be passing it around.

Nice video; it eases the learning process. The essential must always be repeated in order to be memorized. So the song's chorus repeats the LHC's main features and missions. That makes sense and flows naturally. Congratulations to MacAlpine.

My husband showed me this video and I laughed out loud and also found it fascinating. MacAlpine should get into science writing. That is a career I plan to get into myself. I can write pretty well but I can't write songs. Repetition is the key to learning.
