Observing the Perseids

Posted 08-12-2008 by Megan McChain

As a working college student, I rarely have time to squeeze observing into my busy schedule. However, this week, the Perseid meteor shower presented the perfect opportunity to catch an early morning sky show. So, last night, with a friend and a couple lawn chairs (no binoculars or telescope needed), I drove about 50 miles away from the bright lights of Milwaukee to watch the peak of the shower.

The shower was better than I expected. We settled into our observing site around 1 A.M. and watched for about an hour. Under a clear sky, I caught close to 75 meteors, some of which left smoke trails that remained visible for a few seconds. A couple times, I even caught four or five meteors consecutively.

As we were packing up to head home, the shower continued, making it especially hard to leave. I wish I could’ve stayed for at least another hour. It was definitely a sky show I’m glad I took time to watch.

Don’t worry if the clouds did not cooperate in your sky or if you didn’t catch the shower. Even though the peak was last night, there should be a decent show tonight and tomorrow night, perhaps as many as 40 meteors per hour.

Did you watch the Perseids last night? Tell me about your observing experience.

I tried for over an hour but since I was not able to leave home and live near the airport, I never saw anything but a smoky looking trail of sorts, which may or may not have been anything.  A friend at camp told me about it. Oh, well, maybe I will find a video somewhere.  I am glad you got to see it. Must have been great.

I observed the early stages of the Perseids from Starfest. (7-10 August). We had Bortle 3.5 skies and observed several meteors that left ionised trails but I didn't see any smokers.

I spent a pleasant evening and morning atop Mt Kithaironas which lies 90 minutes northwest of Athens so as to enjoy (hopefully) the year's supposedly best meteor shower during its predicted peak.

Regrettably this year was yet another bust! The highlight of my excursion was a bright and colourful bolide which left a smokey trail lasting ten seconds and while the moon was still up. Otherwise, just a handful of ho-hum minor Perseids. For a composite photo during the 2.5 hours my camera was pointing just west of the north celestial pole and where one Perseid was captured, I kindly direct you to www.perseus.gr/Astro-Meteors-Per-20080812.htm .

Hopefully next year will prove to be more fateful in light of IYA.

    Clear skies!

    Anthony.
