Arthur C. Clarke (1917–2008)

Posted 03-19-2008 by David Eicher

Arthur C. Clarke, one of the world’s most renowned science-fiction author, passed away March 19 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Most people know Clarke from his book, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Beyond its literary value, his work greatly influenced public interest in space exploration during the 1950s and '60s.

Recently, Clarke was excited about what he viewed as a golden age of space travel: the birth of commercial space flight. It is unfortunate he passed away before he could see ordinary folks — like you and me — board commercial spacecraft.

Watch an interview I did with CNN International about Clarke’s passing here.

Nice interview, Dave. Sir Arthur C. Clarke was indeed a great mind, whose words will be igniting imaginations and inspiring scientists and speculative fiction writers for decades to come. I have many a fond memory of countless hours spent with my nose buried in one of his books.

The BBC has posted an interesting article comparing Clarke's predictions to science fact.

Leonard Rosenman (September 7, 1924 – March 4, 2008) was an American film, television and concert composer who won two Academy Awards. He was also an astronomer who had Celestron C-14 Compustar telescope which I saw at his home in the Hollywood Hills. He knew my step-grandfather who was concert master of MGM in the 1940's-50's.

Many years ago he purchased several eyepieces from out telescope store for his Celestron C-14 Also Lenard Rosenman who also recentl passed away had purchased a Compustar C-14 (LA/Optical&Calif Telescope CO.)
