New book shows our world - and others - on fire

Posted 11-01-2007 by Jeremy McGovern

CassellAstronomy readers are familiar with Stephen James O'Meara through his column in our magazine and his books. O'Meara's observations convey the brilliance of our universe with amazing detail and keen recognition. Besides being an astronomer, Steve studies volcanos with his wife Donna.

Together, the couple founded a research organization, Volcano Watch International, to uncover volcanic mysteries that might someday save lives. Through Cassell Illustrated, Donna has released a new book, Volcano.

Presented in a gorgeous coffee-book layout, Volcano provides unbelievable photographs that showcase active volcanos and the remnants of historic volcanic activity. The pages take you from the depths of Earth's oceans to the surface of every continent. Donna's text provides scientific perspective on the dozens of awe-inspiring images.

If you wonder why Astronomy would examine a book about volcanoes, check out chapter six. Besides illustrating how our planet's landscape has evolved thanks to its fiery core, O'Meara shows volcanic influence throughout our solar system, from the Moon's magnificent desolation to the solar system's longest active lava flow, found on Jupiter's moon Io.
