Solar Observation on 10/12/13
Posted by johnjohnson on Sunday, October 13, 2013 12:46 PM

Our club was doing a static telescope disply for astronomy day in front of a local Hobby Shop. We had set up several telescopes for public inspection and a couple had solar filters. Just for the heck of it I stuck my Cannon A495 up to the projection of an Orion ST 120 with no filter. The 120 was being used in the solar projection mode onto screen material. I put my camera in maximum zoom and used auto ISO and focus. After a crop and some PS Elements here is the image.

The sun in this photo does not have any good suns spots. Just a few small ones. Nice picture anyway.

The sun has been very quiet in this solar cycle. There are in fact very few sunspots to view right now. What JohnJohnson has captured is similar to the image seen on the SOHO site today, in terms of the number of visible spots.

Today is a beautiful calm day, so I am tempted to try it myself later on. Thanks for the inspiration!
