EQ-6 Tripod Upgrade

I have always considered the tripod that came with my Skywatcher EQ-6 as inadequate for the mount it was carrying. I had considered building a tripod myself. I need a tripod as I am constantly going to different dark sites and star parties and do AP at them. The CGEMDX uses the tripod from the CGEM PRO with 2.75" diameter legs. I thought this was a great Idea on behalf of Celestron to beef up their CGEM mount. I had wished that Skywatcher had caugt on to the idea. I searched several used markets looking for some one who had just bought a new mount with tripod and were looking to sell their tripod because they were going to mount it on a pier. Well my patience paid off finaly. I lucked out and found a unit on Cloudy Nights Classifieds. The seller had a New in the Box tripod for an LX 850. This is Meades newest mount offering featuring 3" diameter legs and lower leg bracing. It is called their Giant Field Tripod. It weights about 35 Lbs. Now while the EQ-6 tripod was considered substantial with 2" legs, it looks like a toy compared to the Meade. Adapting my mount pier extension to the Meade base plate was very simple, only requiring drilling and tapping the pier base to accept the Meade's larger spreader bolt. This tripod looks like it was made for the EQ-6. It is now rock solid and my torsional twist problems have vanished. Torsional twist plagues many mounts when doing AP. Latteral winds on an OTA can deflect the mount ever so slightly as to ruin a subframe. Many may think it is the mount shaking but it is actually twisting, especialy inherent to the design of tripods with small diameter mount heads, like the EQ-6's.
In short upgrading to a larger tripod can rejuvinate almost any mount, breathing new life into an old reliable friend.
EQ-6 and Meade LX 850 Tripods for comparison.
New tripod with scopes mounted.
